Writer/Director Statement:
Exuvia tells the story of a young girl's untimely discovery that her evolving sexuality is changing how the world views her. Its themes of lost friendship, unwanted sexual attention, childhood neglect, and forced maturity are at once deeply personal and inherently universal.
I have wanted to make this film ever since Andie Tursi, a screenwriting student of mine, wrote this in my class five years ago. The story feels like a throwback to the classic shorts of Lynne Ramsey and Jane Campion (SMALL DEATHS, GASMAN, and PEEL). Those shorts had a profound effect on me as a filmmaker. Their simplicity and power are unmatched. I see the same potential in this story about a teenager discovering that she is not as powerless in the world as she thought but there are potential consequences to using that power.
