Writer/Director Statement:
Prior to 2017 the United States took in thousands of Syrian refugees every year (12,587 in 2016 alone) but those numbers have plummeted to the teens since then. Tougher immigration policies and heightened suspicions have changed the rhetoric around immigration where those seeking to enter our country under refugee status are considered suspicious before they are considered oppressed. This film counters that change in tone.
The story is unique because it’s about a conservative immigrant coming face-to-face with prejudice but finding his own stereotypes challenged as a result. His response to his wife at the end of the film is not one of ‘we can’t live here because it is dangerous’ (a conclusion he could easily reach) but rather we can live here because our daughter will be capable.
I want to tell great stories that stay with you beyond an initial viewing and that are rich in theme and irony. I also believe the United States derives its strength from its diversity. To come here from anywhere else is to start a journey that will challenge your assumptions and beliefs but also confirm the best in your own nature. It's not about assimilation but rather expanding your own inclusiveness to those you may not know but could with an open mind and a generous spirit.
