Writer/Director Statement:
My ex's brother buys and flips houses in Columbus, Ohio. He and I would often talk about the conflict he felt as a black man flipping homes in a struggling black neighborhood. He would usually resell those homes to young white professionals. This film was born out of those conversations and my instinct to dramatize them in some way. We shot the film in a house he bought from a long time resident and was preparing to flip.
The neighborhood in Columbus where we shot, Olde Towne East, was the subject of a documentary by Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras' called Flag Wars in 2003. The documentary explored the complicated relationship between the long time black residents of the neighborhood and their new queer identifying neighbors who were rapidly gentrifying their neighborhood.
